Make a $24 Million Difference in the Lives of Kentucky’s Children and Families

When Uspiritus was born just over a year ago, we outlined a clear path for our future – combine the best of Brooklawn Child & Family Services and Bellewood Home for Children to create a more efficient, more comprehensive care agency for thousands of Kentucky’s children and families.

We are well on our way with expanded programs, concentrated services and streamlined, common-sense administration. But Kentucky’s need is great, and our state’s child welfare system is at the breaking point. Just last month, the number of children in placement was at 7,467 – an all-time high.

In the coming months, the 2014 General Assembly will have an opportunity to make a huge difference and leverage $10.5 million in available federal funds to ensure that Uspiritus and other child-caring agencies can better meet the growing need. But without your strong voice, legislators may not take advantage of these matching dollars that can change the lives of Kentucky’s children and families.

Uspiritus and our partner agencies in the Children’s Alliance are asking lawmakers to provide an additional $13.5 million in funding for residential care, therapeutic foster care and intensive in-home services. By doing so, the General Assembly will leverage a dollar-for-dollar match for most of those funds.

The result: an infusion of $24 million to a child-caring system that hasn’t received a funding rate increase in nine years!

On behalf of the vulnerable children and families we serve, I ask for your help today. Email your legislators and let them know you want them to invest in our children. Here’s the simple message you can deliver:

I live in your district and I vote. I am a supporter of Uspiritus, a merger between Bellewood Home for Children and Brooklawn Child & Family Services. Please support the “alternatives for children” line item in the Cabinet for Health & Family Services budget. This money will help Uspiritus continue to provide great care for at-risk children in need and strengthen Kentucky’s struggling families.

You might think your lone voice doesn’t matter, but it does when thousands of people deliver the same message. Your voice is powerful. Your voice will make a difference for the children who have been abused or neglected in this state that we now care for 24 hours a day, every day.
